Alden Mason House by Ueda Design Studio

Alden Mason House is a minimalist residence located in Seattle, Washington, designed by Ueda Design Studio. Originally designed for renowned Seattle artist Alden Mason in 1958 by architect Charles A. Marsh Jr. and builder Tom Paulsen.

The house is situated beside a tranquil stream. It reflects Mason’s deep connection to nature, seamlessly integrating light, water, and foliage into its surroundings. Inside, natural light filters through trees and skylights, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow throughout the day. The house is filled with the soothing sounds of the stream and the rustling of leaves, enhancing its serene ambiance.

After Alden Mason’s death in 2013, the current owners purchased the house and were captivated by its mid-century charm. However, the house had typical issues of its era, such as poor insulation for cold winters and outdated, small kitchen and bathroom spaces. The owners sought to modernize the house while preserving its original character, approaching the renovation with the sensitivity of a historical restoration.

A charming path along the stream leads to the house, guiding visitors from the outside world into the warmth of the home. Upon entering, the open tread stairs make a welcoming statement. The original foyer lacked storage space, a challenge for the family of four, which was solved by adding shoe racks and a coat closet with materials that matched the original design. The west side of the entrance hall, formerly Mason’s painting studios, is now an office, and the east side houses a music room. These rooms continue to serve as creative spaces, honoring Mason’s legacy.

During the renovation, removing the laminate flooring revealed paint stains on the concrete floor, offering a touching connection to Mason’s artistic past. The main level, accessed via a staircase illuminated by a skylight, features a mural sculpture by Mason that welcomes visitors with its artistic presence. The living room, at the center of the house, maintains a strong connection to the outdoors. It harmoniously combines modern furniture, a steel fireplace, and Mason’s artworks, creating a timeless space.

The kitchen was completely transformed for elegance and functionality. Laminated walnut and white cabinets were chosen to complement the various wood species in the house, maintaining a bright and stylish atmosphere. A new skylight and a tubular kitchen hood seamlessly integrate the kitchen with the living space.
